Gigabit PoE Ethernet Surge Protector (RJ45)

PF-SPD-POE-GE is an in-line surge protector for Gigabit Ethernet cables with RJ45 connectors. It goes on the cable just before the equipment it protects — an outdoor IP camera, an access point on a pole or roof, or the switch port at the other end of a long outdoor run — and diverts the surge that a nearby lightning strike induces in the cable to ground, instead of letting it destroy the port.

It handles 10/100/1000 Mbps links and passes 48 V PoE power through, so PoE cameras and access points keep receiving power through it. It is rated for a 5 kA nominal and 10 kA maximum discharge current with a response time under 0.5 ns, and works from −45 to 85 °C in an aluminium housing with mounting ears for a wall, pole box or cabinet. The protector only works when its ground wire is connected to a real earth: bolt the ring terminal to the cabinet's earth bar or the pole's grounding conductor. For a cable that leaves the building, fit one protector at each end.

The protector is made by a Shenzhen manufacturer of CCTV and network surge protectors that produces them under the buyer's own label; the photo shows the manufacturer's standard label. Thailand's rainy season brings frequent thunderstorms, and a surge protector costs far less than the camera, access point or switch it saves. Price includes delivery within Thailand. Warranty is 1 year, and it does not cover a unit destroyed by a direct lightning strike.
